Iomega eGo BlackBelt 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 34621 (Black)

Iomega eGo BlackBelt 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 34621 (Black) Review

The Ego is very convenient and practical. Set-up was a little confusing at first because my older USB ports do not supply enough power to the unit. Still, the product comes with a USB cord that has an optional power USB supply spliced into the main USB cord. After getting everything plugged in, the drive has been seemless to use.

Not bad- a minor design flaws - M. S. Kubota - San Carlos, CA
For what it is it's as good as any portable hard drive I've used. I use it to temporarily store movies and transfer files from my PC to my media player (ASUS OPlay). I get occasional Windows delay write failures from my PC, but I think it's because my PC is 6 years old. I don't have any problems when transferring to the ASUS/NAS. Read and write speed are on very close to my WD MyBook. I need to use the 'two plug' USB splitter cable on my old PC to power it, but I have no problems at all running it off of my Macbook or the ASUS OPlay with a standard mini-USB cable.

The good: It's near silent and runs fairly cool. Although the finish isn't really metal (like the Macbook Pro), it has a nice painted finish and 'feels' nice.

The not so good: The mini-USB port is recessed, so you can only use certain cables with it. Belkins fit fine. Also, the activity indicator light is right next to the USB port, so most of the time I find that it faces away from me. They probably did this simply because the circuit board is right there, but it would make more sense to have the light near the top (flat area) of the drive or on the opposite side of the port. Minor quibble.

The backup software is poor. One program effects Outlook so that I have to turn it off to load my mail.

Beautifully styled, easy to install and use and silent operation. That about says it all.
